Here's how to make the most of your career fair experience and turn conversations into opportunities.

Prepare: A little preparation can go a long way. Taking time to research employers, update your resume, and practice your introduction can help you feel more confident and make the most of your conversations at the fair.

  1. Register for the fair on Handshake. View all upcoming SF State fairs

  1. Update your resume and bring multiple copies so you're ready when employers ask for one. You can check out this Resume Guide [PDF] or schedule a career advising appointment for some helpful tips!

  1. Research employers who will be attending ahead of time so you can create a plan, prioritize who to visit, and have more meaningful conversations at the fair. How to view employers attending a Career Fair in Handshake

  1. Introduce yourself to employers using your elevator pitch. Introduce yourself to employers using your elevator pitch. As Alli Gator discovered, a strong introduction can open doors and start meaningful conversations! The Elevator Pitch [PDF]

  1. Dress in business professional or business casual attire to make a strong first impression and demonstrate professionalism when meeting employers. Interview Attire [PDF]

Attend: You don't have to be an expert to attend a career fair. The goal is to start conversations, learn about opportunities, and practice networking. Challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone. A single conversation could lead to your next internship, job, or professional connection.

  1. Set a goal to connect with 5-10 employers and collect contact information for future follow-up. Building relationships is one of the most valuable outcomes of attending a career fair.

  1. Take notes after each conversation, including opportunities discussed, next steps, and key details about the organization. These notes will make it easier to follow up and continue your research after the fair.

  2. Challenge yourself to start conversations, even if you're nervous. Talk with employers you planned to visit and a few you hadn't considered. You may discover opportunities, industries, or career paths that surprise you.

Remember: the hardest part is often starting the first conversation! Once you've introduced yourself to one employer, the next conversation gets a little easier.

Follow-Up: Attending the fair is only the first step. Following up with employers can help turn a brief conversation into a lasting professional connection, uncover future opportunities, and help you stand out from other candidates.

  1. Reach out to employers you connected with to continue the conversation. Consider requesting an informational interview, asking for application advice, or learning more about opportunities within their organization. Informational Interview [PDF]

  1. Build on the momentum from the fair by using Hiration to practice interview questions, strengthen your application materials, and prepare for future opportunities. Interview Preparation

  1. Send a thank-you message to employers you spoke with within a few days of the fair. A thoughtful follow-up can help you stand out and keep the conversation going.
